How an iconic Persian goat came to live in Luna County New Mexico

An ibex is a type of wild goat known for its impressive, curved horns and sure-footed ability to climb steep,
rocky terrain.  About 20 Ibex were introduced to Luna County, specifically the Florida Mountains, by the
New Mexico Department of Game and Fish in the 1970s as part of a wildlife management effort to
diversify big game hunting opportunities in the state.

The Florida Mountains resemble the ibex’s Persian habitat of steep, rocky and rugged desert climate.
Wildlife biologists believed the area could support a sustainable population, and the location offered minimal conflict with agriculture or urban development. The ibex adapted surprisingly well. By the 1990s, the population had grown significantly, at times exceeding 400-500 animals.

Today, visitors and locals alike can be treated to a sighting along the ridges of the Florida Mountains.
They often move from rocky bedding areas to graze or browse at dawn. At sunset, they return to higher elevations
and rugged terrain for rest and safety.
