Milder Fall Temperatures Create
Perfect Conditions to Visit
New Mexico’s Outback
For travelers who appreciate a sunny, mild climate and a relaxed, desert atmosphere, Luna County can be a great place for a fall trip. Luna County’s fall attractions offer unique Chihuahuan Desert landscapes, casual outdoor recreation, Western history, and local culture.
Miss the crowds to get outside and enjoy nature with gentle temperatures in the New Mexico Outback.
Here’s four reasons why fall might just be the best time to
plan an outing in Luna County:
1. Milder temperatures: By September and October the daytime highs start to drop. Pleasant daytime temps (between 70-80°F) make outdoor activities a joy for rock hounds traversing the trails in and around the Florida Mountains.

2. Optimum scenery & lighting for photographers: With the clear dry air, the light is often perfect for photography. The desert flora can be more vibrant due to September rain and the views are dramatic, especially along the mountain ranges, foothills, canyons.
3. The animals are out playing: Birders will enjoy visiting the mountain foothills and desert flats to watch the Greater Roadrunner, Juniper Titmouse and Cactus Wren flit from place to place searching for food as they bulk up for winter.

4. Less people and better choices for campsites: As kids go back to school, there is less competition for prime campsites. Cooler nights are also a great reason to end the day with yummy s’mores around the campfire.
Tips for enjoying your visit
- Nights can get chilly…so pack for dressing in layers while venturing out for a long day and night of stargazing in some of the best dark sky viewing environments in the country.
- Carry binoculars and take a scenic drive through the Florida’s to catch sight of the iconic Ibex.
- Don’t forget to look down. Desert critters such as the Horned Lizard can easily be overlooked as they blend in with the landscape.
