Ranching / Agricultural living
Luna County has a robust history of farming and ranching, thanks to fertile soils, ample land, and a supportive agricultural community. In 2022, there were 213 farms covering 714,436 acres. That’s up 24% in farmland since 2017. Crop sales in 2022 totaled $97.2 M; livestock, poultry, and related products contributed $71.3 M to the local economy.
Traditional cattle ranching and hay production for feed go hand-in-hand across the rangelands. Cross-border trade potential with proximity to the Mexico border enhances industry potential.

Major crops include melons, fruits and pecans, chiles, and onions. Hay, and cotton also represent a substantial income producing segment of the industry. What’s more, Luna County consistently wins awards and ranks among one of the top US chile pepper producers.
Viticulture is also a major factor for the economy with New Mexico’s Outback being ideal for vineyards cultivated in sandy-loamy soils.
